Training records prove that people doing the work know the work. Even in small operations, basic training logs prevent repeat mistakes.
- Record who was trained, on what SOP, by whom, and when.
- Training is not a one-time event—update when SOPs change.
- Keep it simple so it actually happens.
Decision path
- If errors repeat, improve training records and refresher cadence.
- If you change SOPs, update training immediately.
- If multiple people touch workflow, training logs are non-negotiable.
- List the SOPs that require training (QC, recordkeeping, sanitation, security).
- Create a one-page training log template.
- Record initial training: date, trainer, trainee, SOP name, pass/fail.
- Add a quick competency check (verbal or practical).
- Log refreshers when SOPs change or after incidents.
- Store training logs with SOPs so they’re easy to find.
Training records are cheap insurance. They also reveal where the SOP is unclear.
Quick example

- Assuming people remember verbal instructions.
- Training once and never refreshing.
- Updating SOPs without updating training.
- Not documenting competency checks.
- Storing logs where nobody can find them.
FAQ
What if it’s only me?
Still log it. It forces clarity and prevents ‘I thought I did that’ mistakes.
How long should training take?
As long as it takes to prove competency. Short and consistent beats long and rare.
Do I need signatures?
Signatures are useful. If you use them, be consistent.
